What Is The GCE O-Level Exam?

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O-Level) examination is an annual national examination taken by school and private candidates in Singapore. The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB), Ministry of Education (MOE) and Cambridge Assessment International Education are the joint examining authorities for the GCE O-Level examination.

The GCE O-Level exam is equivalent to the Cambridge IGCSE exam and junior high/middle school completion in many countries. Upon completion of the GCE O-level exam, students can apply to local Junior Colleges or Polytechnics in Singapore, or pursue further education overseas in countries like the UK and Australia.

Take or Retake O-Level as a Private Candidate

Didn’t do well in your GCE O-Level exams or you’ve completed your N-Levels? Take control of your future by sitting for the GCE O-Level exams as a private candidate. To be eligible to register as a private candidate, students must be at least 15 years old as of January 1st of the year they are sitting for the examination. Registration is done through SEAB’s Candidate Portal, and you will be assigned an exam center, a secondary school near your home. The exact location will be shown on your entry proof after registration.

Can International Students take the GCE O-Level Exam?

Yes, absolutely! International students are welcome to take the GCE O-Level exam to gain entry into Singapore’s Junior Colleges or Polytechnics, equivalent to high schools in many countries.

Junior Colleges offer a rigorous 2-year program that prepares students for the Singapore GCE A-Level Exam, a gateway to university education.
Polytechnics provide a 3-year Diploma program focused on practical, hands-on, and career-oriented learning, equipping students with industry-ready skills for the future.

Duration: 6 to 12 months (full-time course)
